Get Involved
The Gunnison Police Department has an unpaid internship program with Western Colorado University. Students from WCU who are enrolled full-time may perform an internship at the Gunnison Police Department. Students will learn about administrative functions and basic investigative techniques. In most cases they work with Administration and Detectives. Students learn about police duties and assist the department with its functions.
The program has been a positive experience for college students as well as department personnel who have had the opportunity to work with them. Many of our past interns are now full time police officers. For more information about our internship program, contact Captain Chris Wilson at (970) 641-8203 or email.
VOLUNTEERING
The Gunnison Police Department is researching the viability of a volunteer program. If you have a desire to volunteer for the police department, submit your resume and a one page cover letter expressing your interest via email and we will contact you.
RIDE-A-LONG PROGRAM
This program encourages members of the community to ride along with a police officer so they can converse one on one. Unlike many jobs in today's society, the duties of a police officer are not easily described to persons outside the profession. Therefore, the purpose of allowing citizens to ride with officers is to add to the public's knowledge and understanding of the problems and complexities of law enforcement. A ride-a-long must be scheduled at least 24 hours in advance of the ride. The rider is subject to a records check and must sign a release of liability form. Contact a Patrol Sergeant to schedule a ride with an officer.
