The Gunnison Volunteer Fire Department (GVFD) is a full service fire department that functions with 40 volunteers and provides fire and rescue coverage throughout Gunnison County and parts of Saguache County, with the exclusion of the Crested Butte Fire Protection District. The Gunnison Fire Protection District service area is 3,300 square miles. The GVFD provides fire suppression for structural and wildland fires as well as rescue service for vehicles and structures. Fire safety education, fire investigations and inspections are handled through the Fire Marshal's Office.

The Fire Marshal:
  • Conducts fire and mechanical inspections of all new commercial and residential construction within the City and County. Conducts re-inspections as necessary.
  • Reviews construction plans for compliance with fire and mechanical code.
  • Conducts fire investigations including on-scene investigating, determining cause and origin, maintaining evidence, assisting in prosecution activities, and offering testimony in court cases.
  • Prepares and presents public education seminars, makes media appearances and prepares and distributes educational materials.
