About Us

MISSION STATEMENT:
The Mission of the Gunnison Police Department is to reflect a responsiveness to, and create a feeling of security in, our community through: protecting the Constitutional Guarantees to all persons; protecting life and property, preserving public peace and order; creating partnerships throughout the community, preventing, detecting, and solving crimes; facilitating the safe movement of people and vehicles and rendering other emergency services as needed.
VISION STATEMENT:
We aspire to promote a safe and crime free environment where families and visitors alike are free to live healthy, productive lives. We take pride in our ability to provide safety thru consistent, innovative and effective problem solving in a collaborative effort that gives reality to the historic tradition that "the police are the public and the public are the police."
HISTORY:
The Gunnison Police Department was created by ordinance on June 15, 1884. Duties included keeping the peace, code enforcement, and security for residents. One person was in charge of these duties and was paid a meager pittance for his efforts. Since then, the department has gone through an evolutionary process to get to where it is today. Our duties are still the same, although expanded greatly. The Police Department is currently authorized at 16 Police Officers, 2 Neighborhood Services Officers, 1 part-time Parking Enforcement Officer, 1 Property Custodian, and 1 full time and 1 part-time Records Staff in an effort to provide the quality and quantity of service our residents have grown to expect.
