Successful Improvements

  • Speed limits throughout residential areas were reduced to 25mph.
  • Flashing speed limit signs were added at various intersections to increase driver awareness of traveling speed.
  • Enhanced flashing pedestrian crossings to provide increased visibility across major intersections of US Highway 50 between Jorgensen and Legion Parks and US Highway 50 and 11th Street. 
  • Implementing industry standard traffic marking for bike lanes with striped green lane painting.
  • Capital improvement projects prioritized by the City to contribute large impacts towards safety including:
    • Ohio Avenue Multimodal Project
    • Safe Routes to School Program
    • Modification of the Spencer Avenue and 11th Street intersection at the Gunnison Public Library
    • Establishment of the multiuse trail between the Western Colorado University's Rady Building and Colorado Avenue
  • Collection of traffic data by the Gunnison Police Department for measurement and analysis.
  • Additional staffing of police officers to assist in increasing enforcement.
  • Adjustment of pedestrian crossing times at the Main Street and Tomichi Avenue intersection.in partnership with CDOT.

Gunnison is a small mountain community on the western slope of Colorado with a population of approximately 6,560 full time residents. The population increases annually with the influx of tourism and Western Colorado University students numbering an additional 2,500. The City of Gunnison is the county seat for Gunnison County. Gunnison has a rich history of ranching, agriculture, mining, tourism and outdoor recreation opportunities that bring many more people through the community.
