Community Resource Officer

The Community Resource Officer (CRO) is responsible for coordinating prevention, safety, and other outreach activities and programs in Gunnison. Currently, the core programs provided by the CRO include:

  • Serves as the School Resource Officer for Gunnison Public Schools, during the school year
  • Serves as the community contact for presentations and safety information
  • Assisting High School groups with their prevention activities including health classes, Student Leadership, and the Courage to Live group
  • Coffee With a Cop - an outreach program at WCU and GHS

In addition to these activities, the Gunnison Police Department works with other groups and agencies to promote safety and prevention. 

Gunnison Police Department officers also participate in programs with the Gunnison community including the Good Neighbor program, WCU Resident Life staff training, WCU orientation programming, NCAA Athletic team presentations and safety presentations for the resident halls.  Prevention partners with the Police Department include:

Gunnison is a small mountain community on the western slope of Colorado with a population of approximately 6,560 full time residents. The population increases annually with the influx of tourism and Western Colorado University students numbering an additional 2,500. The City of Gunnison is the county seat for Gunnison County. Gunnison has a rich history of ranching, agriculture, mining, tourism and outdoor recreation opportunities that bring many more people through the community.
